John Dennis Turns Tragedy Into Hope With Sophomore Album

Following the release of his formidable debut LP Eternity’s Tree in 2014, Rainfeather Records artist, John Dennis, appeared poised for inevitable prestige and attention from the Americana audience and fellow artists alike. Whereas that possibility still remains for the now 25-year-old, the journey to his sophomore album, Second Wind, was marred by: tragedy, addiction, and the very spiritual mires that he had become known to discuss in his lyrics.

Though the death of his girlfriend, Adrienne, and his struggles to come to terms with that grief was not absent from the first album, those close to Dennis witnessed those wounds culminate into a near-fatal battle with alcohol abuse, and many of the all too common benchmarks of a thoroughly broken heart and spirit.

Now nearly three years since his initial release, and two years into an intensive journey of sobriety and healing, John Dennis has returned with a follow up LP that is nothing short of triumphant. The listener is, over the album’s course, invited to share in John’s own journey and glean many of the hard-won insights of hope that he uncovered along the way. Again, he shows an uncanny depth and artistic prowess, and his continued partnership with Bryan Clark and Rainfeather Records proves to be effective on every front.  In John we see a young writer who harkens back to many great songwriters— most obviously: Dylan, Prine, and Springsteen, but in Second Wind, we are shown further a man with the courage to bare his own scars, and to bare musical witness that: no matter how deep the wound, healing is possible; and no matter how dark the horizon or heavy the heart, there always whispers the promise of a second wind.
