Wreck Loose Creates Quirky Piano-Driven Indie Rock on New Album

From the first, forceful moment of their debut full length album OK, Wreck Loose, Pittsburgh-bred indie band Wreck Loose announce themselves as heirs to the tradition of loud, thoughtful, quirky rock that dominated AM radio in the 70s. Max Somerville (keys; vocals), Nathan Zoob (guitar), Derek Krystek (drums) and Dave Busch (bass) marry big rhythms, bright piano and crunchy analog guitar to off-beat lyrics that are paradoxically epic and vulnerable. Songwriter Max tells small scale stories of personal tragedy and redemption, followed by mountain-high tales that make the mythic and historic, personal.

Formed in 2013, Wreck Loose’s mission statement has always been to create indie rock that defies expectations, but remains resonant and direct. OK, Wreck Loose is the embodiment of this mission. Songs zig where they might zag; tensions build and then break into new ideas ideas, at times circling back, at times moving further afield. On tunes such as “Country Mouse” and “The Day Before The Day Of The Dead,” strong melodic ideas and lyrical hooks tie together explorations of genre and space that might otherwise fail to cohere. The overall effect is an eclectic, yet accessible experience.

OK, Wreck Loose is the band’s second release, following 2013’s EP Well. That EP broached many of the lyrical subjects that Max probes further on OK, Wreck Loose. Again and again he circles back to characters on the ropes, tucked into odd spaces, threatening or at threat. These characters take the place of Max himself, offering him the distance to explore his own life. “I don’t think I could write about my real gut feelings on paranoia and anger and love, but I can write about pro wrestlers, werewolves, and most importantly: food,” he says.

Wreck Loose is excited to be releasing OK, Wreck Loose, produced at Treelady Studios in Turtle Creek, PA, on June 16th at the James Street Ballroom. The album represents a year of concentrated effort and is proudly marked by the spirit of discovery that brought these four musicians together in the first place. They’ll be touring to support the record in June and July, after which the plan is to start work on the next one, and to see where that work leads them.
